The Bike Wisdom Voice
Hi, my name is Greg and I ride my bicycle through the city. I would like to discuss the dangers and pitfalls of riding in a so called bicycle friendly city. I live in Chicago, and am lucky to have a mayor (mayor Daley), who loves bicycles and bicycling. The mayor has made it a top priority for bikers to have a bicycle lane to take advantage of while riding in traffic. These lanes are usually well marked, both in the streets, as well as with signs, that are clearly posted for all to see. The problem is the drivers, who seem to have a dislike for bicyclists. I don't know if this is brought on by reckless bikers who dart in front of drivers and pedestrians creating animosity towards the bicyclists or if it could be that everyone is in a hurry and believes everyone else is in their way. If the latter is the case then as cyclists we are doomed or at least in a very scary place. When you ride in traffic you are taking your life in serious peril and have to take great precautions to avoid the driver who does not even see, you because he or she is in a hurry, or on the phone. I have but one thing to say to my fellow cyclists. Please be careful out there.
